Coverage

Hired & Non-Owned Auto / Commercial Auto

Covers your liability when employees drive their own cars for work, plus company-owned vehicles if you have them.

In plain language

When caregivers, nurses or therapists drive their own cars between visits, their personal auto insurance responds first. But if a serious accident exceeds their limits, or their policy excludes business use, the injured party will come after your agency.

Hired & Non-Owned Auto (HNOA) liability protects the business in that situation and when you rent vehicles. It's inexpensive and often required by contracts.

If your organization owns or leases vehicles (transport vans, company cars), you'll need a commercial auto policy, and we'll help you set up driver screening (MVR) practices carriers expect.

Typically covers

  • Liability for accidents by employees driving personal vehicles on business
  • Rental and hired vehicles (HNOA)
  • Company-owned vehicles: liability, physical damage, uninsured motorist (commercial auto)

Usually not covered

  • Damage to the employee's own car (their personal policy)
  • Employees' injuries (workers' compensation)
  • Transporting clients for a fee without proper disclosure (must be rated)

Coverage depends on the policy form, endorsements and exclusions. We confirm the details in writing before you buy.

FAQ

Auto questions

Our caregivers drive clients to appointments. Is that covered?

It must be disclosed and rated. Client transportation is a significant exposure and some policies exclude it. Tell us how often it happens and we'll make sure it's covered.

Should we require employees to carry certain personal auto limits?

Yes, it's a best practice. Requiring minimum personal limits (and proof each year) reduces how often your HNOA coverage is needed. We can share a sample policy.
