Who we insure

Insurance for Hospice and Palliative Care Providers

Hospice teams care for patients and families at the hardest time of their lives, often managing controlled substances in the home. Expectations are high and claims can be emotional, so coverage needs to fit the work.

This page is for

  • Medicare-certified hospice providers
  • Community-based and home-based palliative care programs
  • Inpatient hospice units and hospice houses
  • Bereavement and volunteer programs

Your risks

The risks we plan around

  • Family dissatisfaction claims

Allegations about pain management, delayed visits or communication at end of life.

  • Controlled substances in the home

Diversion allegations and medication errors involving opioids.

  • Volunteers

Volunteers should be covered as insureds for liability and, where possible, accident medical.

  • Staff injury and driving

Lifting, home visits at all hours and long drives in rural areas.

Recommended coverage

Every organization is different; this is where we start the conversation.

FAQ

Hospice insurance questions

Are our volunteers covered?

They can be. Many healthcare policies include volunteers as insureds. We confirm it and can add volunteer accident coverage.

We contract with nursing homes to serve their residents. What will they require?

Usually additional insured status, specific limits and a waiver of subrogation. We'll review the agreement and issue certificates quickly.

We run a palliative care program alongside our hospice. Is it covered?

It should be, but check the policy's description of operations and professional services. Palliative visits for patients who aren't on the hospice benefit are sometimes left off. We make sure both programs are named.

Do you insure stand-alone palliative care programs?

Yes. Community and home-based palliative care has the same in-home exposures as hospice: clinical judgment calls, controlled substances, driving and vulnerable patients. We place it the same way.
